Photography Contest 2005

“Visions of Nature in South Florida”

CONTEST INFORMATION & ENTRY FORM

Entry form and pieces due Friday, March 18, 2005

Purpose

The Earth Ethics Institute (EEI) of Miami Dade College sponsors this contest as a way to engage students in observing the natural world around them here in South Florida and to encourage them to communicate their feelings, understandings, experiences and questions visually through photography.

Contest Categories

Color, B&W, or Infrared film or digital photographs in any format are acceptable

A.     Un-manipulated photographs
Images in this category must follow the following standards for image manipulation: any post shutter manipulation is limited to changes in tonal variations (contrast, brightness, sharpness and hue). No forms and shapes in the photograph may be moved, added or deleted (except by cropping), or otherwise altered. 

 

B.    Manipulated (digitally or otherwise)
 This includes images manipulated beyond what is described above including, but not limited to

§         toned images

§         photo montages or collages

§         colored images

 

Contest Guidelines

  • This contest is open to all MDC students enrolled in Spring, 2005.
  • Students may enter up to two photographs in the contest. Both may be in the same category or may be entered in different categories.
  • Photographs must illustrate Visions of Nature in South Florida. 
    • The South Florida bioregion is considered to be the area south of an imaginary line from West Palm Beach to Ft. Myers and includes the Florida Keys.
  • All works must be the original work of the submitting photographer.
  • Photographs must be submitted as prints only, image size 8x10 minimum
  • IMPORTANT: Photographs may be any size up to 11 inches x14 inches but must be mounted with a white window mat on a 16 x 20 inch sheet of mat board or foam core(Winning entries will be exhibited in 16 x 20 inch frames) 
  • While the photographs are the copyright and property of the artist, they may be used by Miami Dade College for promotional and / or educational purposes including display of digitized images on the Earth Ethics Institute website.
  • Photographs are not insured by Miami Dade College who will take all reasonable steps to ensure security of the work. Therefore we suggest artists make a copy of their work before it is submitted.
  • Photographs must be submitted to the each Campus’ Earth Ethics Coordinator / designee listed on the application by Friday, March 18. Late entries will not be accepted.
     

Judging

  • Photographs will be judged by the faculty and staff of the Earth Ethics Institute. Decisions of the judges are final.
  • Entries may moved between categories at the discretion of the judges.
  • Photographs will be evaluated on their technical and artistic qualities as well as the ability to convey the expression of the contest theme: Visions of Nature in South Florida.
  • Prizes = $500
    • Best of Show  = $150
    • Unmanipulated Photography – 1st ($100); 2nd ($50); 3rd ($25)
    • Manipulated category - 1st ($100); 2nd ($50); 3rd ($25)
    • Honorable Mentions – no $ but will be exhibited and posted on the EEI website
       

Online Exhibition

  • The award winning photographs will be exhibited at Wolfson Campus in the lobby of Room 1261 and scanned for posting on the EEI website during April, 2005.
  • All entries may be picked up after the Exhibition closes. Dates, times and locations will be provided to entrants.
     

Awards Ceremony

  • Awards will be presented as part of the traditional Earth Ethics Institute Earth Day Celebration at Wolfson Campus in April 2005.
